deathnote

Yep, Warner Bros. (America) has acquired the rights to the immensely popular Japanese Manga series Death Note. I LOVED the Manga and I tolerated the Japanese live action adaption. I wonder who they chase after to direct this little gem. Let the casting rumors begin. One site I saw had already prematurely casted Zack Efron as the main character, Light Yagami (There will no doubt be a name change). Aside from the usual moans and groans, if you look at a side by side comparison of Light and Zack, I gotta say, it kinda looks right. Even down to the hairstyle. This should be quite interesting.

One of the members of the insanely popular Japanese pop group SMAP, Kusanagi Tsuyoshi (草彅 剛) (34), was arrested on the morning of April 23 in a park in an area of Akasaka, Tokyo. Apparently he was drunk out of his mind and he was running around being belligerent to everyone in his path on top of screaming and making all kinds of unnecessary noise. But man, is he paying the price for it. Once the pitch man for the change to digital TV over in Japan, that job is now vacant. His face has also now been Read the rest of this entry »

hanaichimonme1

Hello and welcome to my Asian Restaurant Review, where I review some of the Asian restaurants I have been to in the greater Los Angeles area, or any area where I happen to come across a restaurant that serves the cuisine of Asia.

The place of subject will be a Ramen shop located in the Little Tokyo Square that’s been there for years called Hanaichimonme. Let’s break it down into syllables. Say it with me now: HA-NA-I-CHI-MON-ME. Here it is phonetically for the English speakers: HA-NA-E-CHEE-MOE-N-MAY.

I’ve been to this place many times before and I’ve always liked it for some reason. It’s definitely not for the Ramen which is decent but not great. I just recently went back to this place over the weekend after a long while and Read the rest of this entry »

bulgogi

Hello all. And welcome to “Asian food item”, a section devoted to Asian food item’s of the world designed to help all of the unfamiliar become, well, familiar with the cuisine of Asia.

Today’s Asian food item is: BULGOGI (불고기). Ah, Bulgogi. There aren’t enough good things I can say about this item. It is a Korean meat dish that consists of, well, beef and not much else. I’ve seen it with carrots and I’ve seen it without. My personal preference is without. The one constant thing I do notice is the presence of Read the rest of this entry »

frogprincess_up

Here are two projects that please my Half-Breed sensibilities.

I’ve been watching promo’s for Disney•Pixar’s “Up” for sometime now. I have always loved Pixar’s work from the very beginning as have many other people around the world. It wasn’t till I watched a promo in HD, however, that I noticed something different and very interesting. That chubby little boy you see running around with the film’s main protagonist Carl, is, get this, Asian! I didn’t need an Read the rest of this entry »

astro-temp

Embedded below is the newest trailer for the new Astroboy (鉄腕アトム) movie due out in October of this year. Done right, this could be the 2nd coming of the Astroboy character. The character designs look true to the originals, you know, as true as they could get being done by non-Japanese. Let’s just hope they get a coherent story out of this. It’s looking good at the moment.

The story of “Astroboy” centers around a boy robot built by a scientist to replace the son he lost in an accident. It started out as a manga then was made into a phenomenally popular Anime series that started in Japan and then came to US television screens soon after. It was created by the father of Japanese manga and animation, Osamu Tezuka.

Be sure to watch the trailer in HD. It makes ALL the difference.

noriko_calderon_japan_news_

A big story out of Japan recently seems to be about this young girl, Noriko Calderon. Her parents came to Japan in the 90’s illegally from the Philippines and considered Japan their home for many years. But now, all that illegal existing has caught up with them and they will now be deported back to the Philippines. One problem with that: Noriko was born in Japan and will now be without parents. In fact she had the option of leaving with them but she chose to stay behind with an aunt because she knows no other place as her home and only speaks Japanese. Under Japanese immigration law the parents can’t reenter Japan for another 5 years which is a long time but it’s much better than 10 or 20. Hopefully, something can be done to bring em back together during that time. But you just gotta love that name, Noriko Calderon.

naruto-naruto

Yes, you heard right. Series creator Masashi Kishimoto has confirmed that the character of Uzumaki Naruto is not of Jewish heritage, despite what all anime fans of the show/manga may have always thought.

But I kid.

Turns out, starting April 15th, Hulu and Joost, thanx to a deal with VIZ MEDIA, will offer uncut and English dubbed episodes of the popular anime series, Naruto. Now I knew they offered Naruto (ナルト) on Hulu and last I checked they were in English and didn’t offer Japanese subtitled episodes. Then I checked again recently and now they offer subtitled episodes in Japanese. And now Read the rest of this entry »

Hello all. And welcome to “Asian food item”, a section devoted to Asian food item’s of the world designed to help all of the unfamiliar become, well, familiar with the cuisine of Asia.

The first item is kind of off-putting, especially to many Americans who aren’t exactly used to eating raw foods.

Tamago Kake Gohan (卵掛けご飯) is a Japanese dish and it literally means “Egg over rice”. It is typically eaten for breakfast as it is painfully simple to Read the rest of this entry »
